I suggested that, but when I think about it, he'll have to name the records
formats differently.

If the differences are not too great, he could just use one printer file and
use one record format or the other depending on which version of the report
he's using. That would be the easiest way. (I hate cloning programs - makes
more work when you have to maintain them).

Have two printer files on your F-specs.  That should work.
