One way is in the FAQ.  http://faq.midrange.com  Search for the words 
(file variable)  The entry is 'How can I refer to a file as a variable?' 
 It uses SQL.  It isn't perfect, in that you will need to know quite a 
bit about the fields you want to retrieve.
It seems to me that most people asking for this functionality are trying 
to use XML.  I personally love RPG IV, but I believe there are better 
ways to use XML than to hand roll RPG code.
