free-format move *USA date value to 6-digit numeric in YMD format

In v5r2, how the #*$& does one, in free-format RPG, move a *USA date value
to 6-digit numeric in YMD format?

I've tried various combinations and contortions of %date, %char, %dec, %int
with no success.

I would like to avoid jumping out of free-format and avoid having to write a
bif to do it.

I've probably missed something so obvious, but after about 20 go 'rounds
with this, I've given up.
