Immeasurably better.  Not only do you have auto-completion for variables and
online help for BIFs, but you have the VERIFY function, which in effect does
a complete syntax scan of your source code very quickly.  Not quite the
immediate gratification of a line-by-line syntax check, but still quite
effective.
