The reason I said this was because they did a 
write(e) ...;
if %error; // assume duplicate key error
  update...
endif;
On this I disagree.  They could do what others suggested
write(e)...;
if %error;
  Select;
  When %status=     ; // duplicate key
    update...
  Other;
    // generic error handler
  EndSl;
EndIf;
