For some reason though, it does not update the display file until after all

By default, DSPFs will be compiled with DFRWRT(*YES), which optimizes 5250
data streams by not sending output operations until you also do an input.
You can override that behavior with one of two ways:

 - Use DFTWRT(*NO) on the CRTDSPF (or OVRDSPF), which affects all formats in
the display file
 - Add keyword FRCDTA (force data) to the record format(s) which you want
output immediately

I prefer the second method since:

 - It leaves other formats optimized
 - It is more self documenting in the source
 - You don't need to remember to specify anything special on the CRTDSPF (or
use a tool to do it for you)
