Unnecessary use of space.... :-(
It uses less space than a temporary file in QTEMP would. And less than the additional records in the subfile do.
This doesn't work if you load a page at a time.
Neither would the OP's thought of putting a key on the subfile. I therefore can safely assume that he's not loading it page-at-a-time.
However, I agree with you that if you need to have a subfile that's larger than 32767 records (since that's the limit of an array) that this approach wouldn't make sense. Instead, you'd want to use a temp file, or user index, or dynamic memory management.
