Woo hoo!  I got it.

It just so happens I was able to make AUTHITEM the same layout as NXITMMST,
plus 3 fields from NXCHNBIL.  So the following statement works:

Exec SQL  Insert into AUTHITEM
            (Select i.*, c.CHCST, c.CHSEQ, c.CHAUT
            From NXCHNBIL C
            Join NXITMMST I
            On c.ITNBR = i.ITNBR
            Where c.ACREC = 'A' and
                  c.CUSNR = :SctMst and
                  c.CHAUT in ('O'));

This SQL stuff gets cooler by the week.
