RUNSQLSTM SRCFILE(ROB/QSQLSESS) SRCMBR(DARRELL) COMMIT(*NONE)
of this member
CREATE TABLE QTEMP/DARRELL
  (MYKEY CHAR (1 ) NOT NULL WITH DEFAULT,
   MYDATA CHAR (15 ) NOT NULL WITH DEFAULT);

INSERT INTO QTEMP/DARRELL VALUES('A', 'Yo dude');

update qtemp/darrell
set mydata='Everest'
where mykey='A';

Results in:
runqry qryfile(qtemp/darrell)
....+....1....+....2.. 
MYKEY  MYDATA 
  A    Everest 
********  End of report  ********

Methinks the problem was more in the formatting of your update statement. 
Or perhaps you were confused with the select statement?
