My reading of your code snippet is....

if var2 = value
  var1 = TRUE
else
  var1 = FALSE
endif

Which is absolutely correct if var1 is an indicator (as Francis mentioned, 
and I actually did intend with my second snippet from the original post):
namedIndicator = (var1 = var2);
