Another thing to consider is just exactly how often do you expect to get 
invalid numeric data, and, are you going to move it to a numeric field if 
it is ok?  If errors only occur rarely, and you are planning on moving it 
to a numeric field anyway, then you will have better performance with a 
monitor group:

Monitor;
MyDecField=%dec(MyCharField);
On-error;
  // invalid numeric data
  // perform error recovery
EndMon;

Have you ever used MONMSG in CL?  What would you think if IBM did away 
with the MONMSG command and made you call APIs to verify stuff first?
Monitor is RPG's equivalent of MONMSG.
