Subject: My last word on RE: Chalk one up for "The Cycle"
Hi All,
I am not advocating that everyone should use the cycle, sometimes it sucks,
likewise I am not saying don't use SQL or any of the new tools, because, as
a lot of people have said is IMHO quite correct, use the tool that suits you
for the job. What increasingly frustrates me is the "don't use it cos it's
old, don't learn/teach that cos its old, thats rubbish cos it's old"
attitude of a lot on here.
Sometimes it is good to write something in 2 or 3 lines of code, sometimes,
e.g. for clarity, it is good to use 5 or 10 lines. I saw an example some
while ago of someone wanting to replace a single MOVEA with about 5 lines of
SQL. It's an individual thing, but so long as shops are using code ranging
from RPGII to RPGILE and whatever is beyond, then the RPG programmer (and
that includes those that come in from COBOL, Java, C, whatever) needs to
know what it is they are touching before they touch it or don't touch it.
And as for re-writing a program for a complex change, I hope the boss gives
you permission cos most that I have seen would kick your ass out of the door
so fast for doing that.
Just my thoughts
Steve
