Why not have a "debugging service program" that has easy to call routines to log a debug message? Then the calling application doesn't have to know or care where the output goes. It can be a spooled file today, a message queue tomorrow, the job log (my preference) the day after that...

Absolutely. I need to gently encourage some folks toward RPG IV first. :-) In the interim, by using a simple spooled file toggled on U1 or a data area (don't get me started) I hope to introduce the idea of instrumentation as a general concept.
