I'm not convinced that using a "standard" technology/protocol but ignoring
the standards body when adding extensions is any better than creating your
own technology or protocol. If you aren't going to respect the standard,
don't pretend to! I wouldn't mind if they made up their own GUI
protocols, as long as they are well documented and openly published so
that people can interoperate with them, write clients for other platforms,
etc.
Just extend the browser with AJAX or whatever
and be done
with it. Let the other catch up.
Is AJAX really an extension of any standards, or is just a new way of
combining existing standards?
