I really don't understand where you're coming from. Why would it "defeat the purpose" of XML?

Perhaps there's an application-specific instance where mapping XML to multiple PFs would be a bad thing, but, speaking in general, it certainly doesn't defeat the purpose. XML is intended to be a format for data interchange that's easily supported by all applications on all platforms. How you use that data once you've extracted it from the interchange format is entirely up to you!

Given the recursive/nested nature of XML, I would expect that multiple physical files would be the normal procedure in any business.
