Hi Mike,

I usually open the file once by checking if it's not already open:

    if (not %open(MyFile));
        open MyFile;
    endif;

This way it's only opened when and if needed.  Then, the file will be closed 
when it's activation group has ended.  If you want to close it manually at 
the end of the application or LR time, call a close file subprocedure:

    if (%open(MyFile));
        close(e) MyFile;
    endif;
