my problem is understanding the whole "record idenfification entry" business, about which I'm completely clueless.
There's only one kind of record being read.

I'm not following you... if there's only one type of record, why are you bothering with the record identification stuff? Just list the file name, then the fields. For example:

IMYFILE NS
I 1 10 FIELD1
I 11 20 FIELD2
