The only thing that need to watch out for is that this method requires
the date to be valid date.  Otherwise the program will fail.  You could
monitor for this and handle it differently if you cannot be sure that
date is always valid.

Thanks to all for all the suggestions.  I finally settled on:

@numa = %dec(%char(%date(@numd:*mdy):*ymd0):6:0); //mmddyy to yymmdd

for this.  It was compact and just understandable enough to get me by.

I also wonder about execution time but in this particular SQL update
there shouldn't be more than a few hundred records (at most) to process.
