I thought that I read somewhere (heaven knows, I may be smoking some
really good stuff today) that a subprocedure could invoke (EXSR) a
subroutine.

That would have been me, Jerry. I use this occasionally to divide up large
procedures. As others have said, the subroutine needs to be inside the
subprocedure.
