That crossed my mind too. Tim, if you want to look in to this you might
want to by looking at the alarm() Unix-type API. This post

One problem I can think of with the signals approach is that if the
timeout occurs, you will end up having to redo part of the SQL
processing AFAIK. I kind of like the idea though - if the query takes
more than x seconds, pop up a window saying "it seems this query will
take a while, would you like me to email it to you, or would you like to
start over with different parameters?"
