That was it!

The service program has an internal only procedure SetError to add the error to the list. Within SetError I *was* updating the em.fieldname version.

BUT -

My calls to SetError were "SetError(ErrMsgNbr:ErrMsgDS)" when they should have been "SetError(ErrMsgNbr:em);"

Thanks everyone for more sets of eyes. A brain f*** it was.
