I think you're probably right that most RPG programmers (myself included) wouldn't remember all the specific details of writing a subfile program from scratch. I don't think that makes them bad programmers - that's why we have manuals an reference guides.

I would expect that most could sketch out the basic structure in pseudo-code. It would be a sad state of affairs if the same 95% didn't at least have a vague idea of how their templates worked.
