Scott,

Perhaps he's rightsizing an application from PC based to i based? And,
the original application, while running on a PC, stored it's data on the i
(in the ancient QDLS no less). So now they're killing two birds with one
stone:
- Move the application from the PC to the i, thus negating the need to
specify a server (\\myas400) in the data.
- Move the data out of QDLS and elsewhere in the IFS.
And, the original data is in a DB2 file now and they have to convert
homegrown datalink fields from the remote server to local.
