I'm looking at the documentation for the HSSFSheet class and it has a method named 'getLastRowNum'. I haven't tried it, but it sounds like what you're looking for.... might be worth a shot.

In my opinion, the best way to red the entire file is to use the event model (rather than the user model that you're attempting to use). However, the event model doesn't let you make updates to the sheet, so it's probably not useful to you. (In a private e-mail, you told me you wanted to update it -- though you didn't mention it on RPG400-L)
