No idea what would be better but that would certainly be another
possibility. Of course a trigger could handle those things (updates and
deletes) too... 

I was really just trying to offer some additional possibilities that weren't
simply a variation on what already exists.

Wouldn't it better to use a Journal? That way you could not only add new
records, but also deletes and updates...
