If you're open to a commercial solution, we have a product named POP/400
that can be used to download emails from a POP3 server, detach the
attachments and preserve the message text as well if you want. It's
pretty inexpensive so it might be worth a look.

Is there an example somewhere of automating the process of receiving an
e-mail on the i and detaching it's attachment and storing the attachment
in the IFS?
