I don't know much of the details myself. Some of the additional automatic storage is added by the translator, and the RPG compiler doesn't know anything about it. Some of the automatic storage used for return values does get reused for other things in the procedure, but for reasons I don't know, there is some automatic storage that cannot be reused.

It used to be much worse - something on the order of 7 times the return value size. Now, after what was a lot of effort by the translator team, I believe it's on the order of 2 times the return value size.
