But then I realised that anyone else in our shop reading that would not
understand.


Whenever I'm concerned that a programmer won't understand what I'm
doing, I add a comment explaining what the code is doing. Or, I'll
bring up the technique in a group meeting and explain the benefit of
using it. What you're essentially doing is lowering the bar of
expectations. With proper commenting and mnemonic naming, any code
should be understood.
