I'm not clear on the problem, so I wonder why the optional tags aren't generated in a function (procedure) that simply returns whichever optional tags are appropriate? Depending on whatever parm values are supplied, one or more "optional" tags could be returned as the string that gets plugged into the expression.

Seems to be as 'pretty' as you'd want to make it.
