Of course, recognize that the proposed techniques do not handle "special cases" such as "McDonald" or "MacDonald" etc. -- they will end up as Mcdonald" or "Macdonald" ... :-o You could add code to look for "prefixes" such as "Mc" or "Mac" but then you run the risk of changing "Macintosh" to "MacIntosh" ... :-o

Probably best to just run the simple conversion, and then have someone scan them and make any minor corrections manually.
