I can see that for most Western languages the associated
mixed-byte CCSID is 'none'. I don't think the RPG manual means to say that for job CCSID 37 the CCSID of the character data
is assumed to be 'none'.

Of course if there is no DBCS data in the stream, then a choice of a single-byte CCSID would work fine. :-) But, I am not sure about that doc reference for the char function nor the table of langid & mixed. I have only ever dealt with such issues using internal\system interfaces; i.e. how the DB2 determines the value, or how Query/400 stores literals. A search of the archives yielded for the three tokens _ dbcs related ccsid _ several references [and messages & links in the threads], including reference to %char(ucs2) and the API for which I had included a link.
