In almost every case where I have seen those symptoms (other than compiler bugs) it has been caused by mis-matched parameters or other similar abuses of pointer-based storage. In other words the memory is being corrupted. When you run in debug the changes that occur in the job's memory model result in the corruption occurring elsewhere - where it doesn't show up.
