Frankly, pointers aren't a good area for experimentation.  You need to 
fully understand what you are doing.  It needs to be perfectly clear in 
your mind what's happening -- because if it isn't, you are unlikely to 
have code that works properly.

Incorrect use of pointers will often lead to bugs that don't show up in 
 testing, but fail sporadically in production.  Often at the most 
inopportune times.

Consider eliminating the pointer logic from the program.
