One of the problems with XML-INTO with %Handler is that the parser  
"owns" the storage that is passed to you and you have no opportunity  
to initialize it as you can with your own DS used with XML-INTO. It  
would have beeen nice if there had been an option in %Handler that  
allowed you to request that the fields in the DS be initialized to  
defaults before the structure was filled.  At least the 6.1 PTFs give  
you an alternative method - but as you say - you gotta get there first!
