I think Jeff Davis hit the nail on the head, though I haven't tested.
In my
Stmf_writeln() procedure, I'm writing one line at a time. I should
probably
do some buffering and write it out in chunks, but I haven't updated it
yet.

Sorry, I had based my responses on the premise that there was no difference
between the two methods except that one of them used procedures in a service
program and the other did not. If there were also technique differences,
all other comparisons become invalid or at least questionable.
