Couldn't you code it in the global section of the program or service
program?

I was converting some existing cycle code to /free format in a
subprocedure and ran across the following issue with a data area:

1416 DDebitNmbrS s 6 0 Dtaara(DebitNmbr)
======> aaaaaa
*RNF3757 20 a 022401 The keyword is not valid for definitions in
subproc

Is there any way to do this in s sub procedure or am I stuck with using
a
sub routine only? The reason I ask is because I came across the
following
on the IBM site:

No cycle code is generated for subprocedures. Consequently, you cannot
code:
Prerun-time and compile-time arrays and tables
*DTAARA definitions
Total calculations
