I'm trying to find out how to get the specific exception ID when an UPDATE fails on a file, and I'm having trouble remembering whether or not there's an easy way to get it. I know that %STATUS will get me a status code (and constraints can fire 1022, and maybe also 1021), but I see that the exception ID (bytes 40-46) in the PGSDS is blank after an I/O error, at least if it's been caught with an error indicator.

Is there any easy, RPG-specific way to get the exception ID on a "caught" file I/O error? Or do I have to dig it out of the joblog? Or set up some sort of exception handler?
