You can use a named indicator.

d MyFlag s n inz(*off)
// Rule validation
if rules satisfied;
MyFlag = *on;
endif;

// Later...
if MyFlag; // Data type N is boolean, true *on, false *off
do something...
endif;

This is the same as "if MyFlag = *on;"

You still need to convert Y to *on and N to *off, but that would be in the
validation routine.
