It's been almost 20 years, but I fought that battle too, while
converting old S36 systems, and afaik, you're on the mark. I would
suggest writing a subroutine or method for open, one for read and one
for close. That way the complexity is out of the main-line code, which
doesn't care which file it is. You just need to tell the program which
file to use with an entry parameter.
