This is not a program I can convert to ile.

Why not?

RPGIII's string handling sucks.

Is CVTRPGSRC really that difficult?

Anytime I touch and RPG III program, it gets run through CVTRPGSRC.
Given DFTACTGRP(*YES), the resulting program will act the same as it
always as. No ILE related concerns, such as activation groups.

The only time I've ever had an issue with a converted program was when
there was an existing bug, mismatched parameters, in the converted
program. The bug didn't manifest when the program was RPGIII, but did
when it was RPGIV.

I suppose you could always CALL and RPGIV program to do the conversion....

But given IBM's decision to split the compilers into separately
chargeable components, having a standard the requires all RPGIII
programs to be run through CVTRPGSRC before making any changes is
pretty easy to justify.
