I ran you suggested SQL and I got the following result.

MIN MAX

2.983 9.000

So probably nothing to wrong.

I think has Charles said I'm just trying too hard and probably got
mislaid by examples based on RPGIII.

I'm going to standardize on the model suggested :-

MYCOL = %TrimR(some_value)

This is my first real venture with VARLEN so thanks to you all.

Is the following a true statement For the MOVE command to work with
variable length fields then the DS technique must be used.
