If i understand you correctly, you have something like this: '
1234567' and it might be defined as 7 digits and 2 decuimal places in
the file. You want to put it in a field that is defined as 15.5 (for
example).

Convert the character field to a numeric field with no decimal points
using %dec.
Divide the number by 10 raised to the number of decimal places (eg 2
would be 100, 3 would be 1000)
