More to the point, if you specify start and end positions for the fields (which is more idiomatic to RPG anyway), there is no need for an OVERLAY keyword (and indeed, with traditional RPG scatter-gather I/O, no need to put fields into the DS other than the ones you're trying to make contiguous, and no need for them to be contiguous in the file).
