Date, time, and timestamp types are possibly even more compelling than
pointers.

I agree with this assertion. When I'm deciding the deployment of various types of logic in a multi-platform design, I try to put all date processing logic in the RPG layer. And timestamps are wonderful for all types of logging requirements.
