The irony is that the code (signals/alarm) is there so that the sockets connection CAN fail gracefully. Originally, I didn't have it and if the host/port was offline then the program would hang. The signals/alarm stuff solved that issue for me.

But, that gives me an idea...maybe the signals/alarm routine isn't being executed for some reason in the CGIDEV2 environment..I'll see if I can run debug on the CHK_PORT program call....
