You may want to check out Easy400.net, which has packaged up Klement's
POI stuff in a (presumably) easy-to-use utility:

(The link above is the list of all utilities; the Excel stuff is near
the bottom. Though there seems to be a lot of potentially useful
stuff there; it's worth a look.)
I can't say I have used it myself. Since I prefer Python, I generate
Excel files using iSeries Python and xlwt:
