Assuming that this is a fixed-length alphanumeric array, then I agree. 
If this array contains packed, integer, or VARYING fields, then nulls 
will be commonplace.  (But, in that case the DS approach won't work either.)

But, my chief complaint with this technique is the "on-line wonder 
coding that's hard for others to understand"  (as you put it).  That's 
the reason why I wouldn't use it.
