Regarding modernization options (I know people are going to burn me in effigy for this) a .NET thick client connecting to an RPG backend works well for strictly in-house apps.


AFAIK, editing generated code is (?almost?) always a bad idea, not just in EGL, for two reasons.
1. The code the generator outputs in NOT user-friendly.
2. Manually changed code is overwritten when you generate again.
