I think you're trying to simplify the wrong thing.

What are they doing with this number?

For example if you have
xFactor=GetXFactor('ForCurrencyConversion');
Then GetXFactor could decide if it's stored in a datastructure, file, etc.
Everyplace it's called wouldn't have to be changed just because of how
it's physically stored.
But coding all the places that use GetXFactor to decide the length and
precision will come back to haunt you.
Then GetXFactor could (if retrieving from a data area) simply tell it the
data area is *DEC and get it from there. But, if you're storing multiple
things in the data area and the 'ForCurrencyConversion' is in bytes x to
y, and you want to convert that substring from character to decimal then
it could handle that also by any number of ways:
- overlapping data structures.
