So I defined brand as dim(999)- I am anticipating max of 999 or min of 3.

d brand likeds(brand_Template) DIM(999)

doesnt brand_Template get dim(999) applied automatically in below ? since you mentioned(
Your brand_Template doesn't have DIM(999). You only have DIM(999) on the brand subfield of brands_Template.)

d brand_Template DS qualified based(dummy_ptr)
d name 10a
d branchcode 5a
d productcode 6a

I don't understand your question about whether brand_Template gets dim(999) applied. The brand_Template data structure just above here does not have any DIM. The definition of the brand subfield using LIKEDS(brand_Template) DIM(999) does not have any effect on the brand_Template data structure.

I confess that I am somewhat confused by all your data structures, so I can't answer your more detailed questions.

You can look in the cross-reference section of the compiler listing to see how the compiler is defining your XML data structures, to see if you need more or fewer DIM keywords in your various definitions.
